Here's the practical guide every pool owner needs. In this article 1. The Big Three: pH, Chlorine, Alkalinity 1. Testing Your Water 1. Common Problems & Solutions 1. Weekly Maintenance Schedule #### The Big Three: pH, Chlorine, Alkalinity pH (7.4-7.6): Affects chlorine effectiveness and swimmer comfort. Chlorine (2-4 ppm): Kills bacteria and algae. Alkalinity (80-120 ppm): Stabilizes pH. Test these weekly minimum, twice weekly in summer. #### Testing Your Water Test strips: Quick, affordable, less accurate. Liquid test kits: More accurate, takes practice. Digital testers: Most accurate, higher investment. Professional testing: Monthly at pool store for comprehensive analysis. Cloudy water: Check filter, balance chemicals, clarifier if needed. Scale buildup: Lower calcium hardness, check pH. Algae on walls: Brush, shock, algaecide, check phosphate levels. #### Weekly Maintenance Schedule Monday: Test and adjust chemicals. Wednesday: Brush walls and vacuum. Friday: Clean skimmer baskets, check equipment. Sunday: Test chemicals again. 2-3 hours weekly keeps most pools healthy. #### Final Thoughts Consistent testing and small adjustments prevent big problems. When in doubt, take a water sample to your local pool store for free testing.
